Dear NAMI Jacksonville Family,
I want to personally thank the Governor for his leadership and for signing critical legislation this year that significantly advances mental health care in our state. Notably, the Tristin Murphy Act, sponsored by Senator Jennifer Bradley (R-Fleming Island), which reforms how individuals with serious mental illness are treated within the criminal justice system, and Senate Bill 1620 sponsored by Senator Darryl Rouson (D-St. Petersburg), which improves standardized mental health assessments, enhances crisis response services for seniors, and invests in workforce development. These are meaningful victories that will positively impact the lives of many Floridians.
These initiatives reflect a strong commitment to addressing the complex challenges of mental health and improving access to care. For NAMI Jacksonville and the community we serve, they represent real hope and tangible progress toward a more effective, compassionate system.
At the same time, we must also acknowledge a devastating setback. Despite receiving funding for the last several years, NAMI Jacksonville’s project was eliminated in this year’s line-item veto list, resulting in the loss of a significant and vital source of support. This funding has made it possible for us to provide lifesaving programs and services to individuals and families affected by mental illness across Northeast Florida — regardless of background, diagnosis, or circumstance.
As many know, it was an unusual session in Tallahassee this year, and the $117.4 billion budget cut $567 million in line-item vetoes, marking the Governor's commitment to reduce the budget. I want to sincerely thank our sponsors, Senator Clay Yarborough (R-Jacksonville) and Representative Kiyan Michel (R-Jacksonville) for their support and advocacy for the project, along with our local lawmakers who continually advocate for NAMI Jacksonville and our programs.
Without this critical funding, our ability to sustain and expand essential services — like peer support groups, education programs, outreach, and advocacy — is seriously impacted. This comes at a time when the demand for mental health support is higher than ever.
That is why I am asking you — our community, partners, and supporters — to step up and help us fill this gap. Your financial contribution will allow NAMI Jacksonville to continue offering hope, healing, and connection to those who need it most.
Additionally, I urge you to respectfully advocate directly to the Governor, sharing your support for increased investment in mental health services and the importance of restoring funding for community-based programs like ours. Your voice matters — and it can make a real difference.
Together, we can ensure that no one in our community has to face their mental health journey alone. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier Northeast Florida — one individual, one family, one life at a time.
Thank you for standing with us.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Mailloux
