The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization, dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
In 1979, a small group of families with a shared secret – family members with severe mental illness – met around a kitchen table. Together, these families battled the stigma of mental illness and the discrimination toward those living with it, to make positive changes for their loved ones.
What started as a small group of people who were determined to make a difference has grown into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Over the past two decades, thousands of parents, spouses, siblings, friends, and those living with mental health conditions, have worked tirelessly to bring mental illness out of the shadows.
Today NAMI is an alliance of more than 700 state organizations and local affiliates who work to advocate, raise awareness, and provide support and education to those who need it.

NAMI Jacksonville, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, was founded in 1987. NAMI Jax is made up of adults with mental illness, and families and friends of individuals with mental illness. We provide free mental health educational and support programs, and advocate for more, better-quality services for those who are affected by mental illness.
We give support and friendship to each other, and share the knowledge gained through our own experiences – both successes and failures. Shared experiences foster supportive networks that can help those going through a time of crisis or heartache.
The mission of NAMI Jacksonville is to support and improve the quality of life for family members and those living with mental illnesses and co-occurring substance abuse through compassion, education, and advocacy.
